There’s been plenty of buzz surrounding rotary engines lately. Even engineers at General Motors are reportedly considering a rotary for the next-generation Chevy Volt. But Mazda has been the only brand capable of mastering this company engine, which makes it no surprise that the latest rumors suggest that the next-generation Mazda MX-5 could get a rotary engine. This is a rumor, however, that’s come and gone before, Connecticut Mazda Dealers point out.

The 2012 Mazda MX-5 is said to become a bit larger, be capable of achieving 50 mpg, and still be a blast to drive. Early reports have suggested that all this would be achieved with the help of Mazda’s new SKY-G engines, but according to Japanese magazine Best Car, an ultra compact rotary unit may help to deliver the power and save weight. While Honda has introduced the CR-Z hybrid sports coupe, its fuel economy tops out at 39 mpg, Washington DC Honda Dealers concede.

Unfortunately, the goal of achieving high-mileage will not be achieved by the Wankel engine alone. That’s why rumors also suggest that the MX-5 will be a hybrid to maximize fuel economy, just like the Fiat 500 prototype developed by FEV. Ford has been without an SVT Focus for several years and enthusiasts are hoping to see the RS version sold in Europe make it to these shores, Dayton Ford Lincoln Dealers say.

Although the rumors are intriguing, a rotary/hybrid seems a bit complex for a this relatively affordable little roadster. That’s why a fuel-efficient engine combined with a turbo would be a more probable alternative, and would help keep this car’s price down.
