New reports from Mazda are hinting that the rotary-powered RX-8 coupe will no longer be sold after the 2011 model year. The reports come after Mazda has already officially halted sales of the sports car in Europe after 2011 due to the strict EuroV emissions standards.
Last refreshed in 2009, sales of the the Mazda RX-8 have slowed somewhat, especially as it battles more recent offerings from Japanese and domestic automakers. Only 128 units of the RX-8 were sold last month.
Mazda fans should still be hopeful however, as the beloved RX-7 nameplate is likely to be revived. This new model will of course feature Mazda’s latest rotary engine and is rumored to produce as much as 250 horsepower and carry a price tag of around $25K. Enthusiasts have long appreciated the smooth power delivery of the rotary engines, according to Liberty Mazda Hartford.
Although details regarding the next rotary-powered sports car have yet to be confirmed, it will likely not arrive here before 2013.
