Mazda has just revealed the updated Demio in Japan (also known as the Mazda2 here in the U.S.). While the facelifted model looks fairly similar to its predecessor, the biggest change is under the hood, as it now boasts an all-new 1.3-liter SKYACTIV gasoline engine.

Combined with an astronomical compression ratio of 14.0:1 and stop-start technology, this new SKYACTIV unit is one of the most fuel efficient engines ever offered by Mazda. The automaker claims that it will achieve 58.8 miles per gallon on the JC08 evaluation cycle – which is better fuel economy than most hybrids.

Mazda built this engine with a range of technologies that help squeeze out as much MPG as possible. Technologies include a cooled EGR system that reduces engine knock, multi-hole fuel injectors that cool the combustion chamber, dual sequential valve timing and lightweight engine internals that are designed to reduce friction loss.

The updated Demio is priced from the equivalent of $14,303 U.S. based on the current exchange rate. At that price it’s truly a bargain considering that a less-efficient hybrid will cost much more. It goes on sale later this month in Japan, so expect to see the 1.3-liter engine in the Mazda2 here in North America soon.
