Mazda’s recent efforts to create fuel-efficient, powerful engines is showing no sign of slowing down. Evidence of the automaker’s dedication to innovative internal combustion powerplants could be seen at the NY Auto Show where Mazda’s CEO announced that Sky-D direct-injection diesel engines will be coming to the U.S. in 2012.

Although these new innovative diesels have been confirmed to arrive Stateside, what remains to be seen is what vehicle they will be mated to. The SKY-D may find its way beneath the hood of an updated Mazda6 or possibly one of Mazda’s crossover vehicles.

Regardless of what vehicle is offered with this new diesel engine, Mazda understands that diesels are not exactly in high demand in the U.S. Nonetheless, Mazda CEO Takashi Yamanouchi still believes that opportunities shouldn’t be ignored. This good planning on Mazda’s part because, seaside Mazda says, buyers are interested in economical vehicles, which diesels have proven themselves to be.

Prior to introducing these engines here in the U.S., Mazda will first be introducing its latest generation SKY-G direct-injection gasoline engines. Offering more horsepower and better fuel economy than some of Mazda’s existing engines, the SKY-G may first be introduced in the next-gen MX-5 Miata roadster before becoming available throughout the Mazda lineup.

Aside from new gasoline and diesel engines, Mazda is also going to be experimenting with hybrid power trains, thanks to a new partnership with Toyota.
