While the rotary-powered RX-8 will soon come to an end, Mazda is still looking to develop the Wankel engine. Mazda has been developing rotary engines since 1964, and is expected to continue even after the demise of the current RX-8.

The latest rumors suggest that Mazda could look for help on a new rotary engine with Audi. Reports suggest that the two automakers have already embarked on informal talks. Audi is no stranger to rotaries, as the recently unveiled A1 hatchback-based e-tron concept features a 254cc Wankel range-extender located beneath the trunk floor.

At this time, Hickory Mazda confirms there are few concrete details regarding the upcoming RX-7 sports car, but one thing appears certain – the rotary engine isn’t dead just yet. However, this unique powertrain may take on another life as a range-extending battery charger, rather than the sole source of propulsion.

Aside from the rotary rumors, expect the next sports car from Mazda to receive micro-hybrid technology, auto stop/start, and extensive use of lightweight materials.
