An Everlasting Blue Sky: The Mazda SKY Concepts

by jburney on April 2, 2010

Mazda announced at the 2010 New York Auto Show that the all-new SKY Concept engines look set to hit US soil as early as 2011.

The first step by Mazda is to introduce the SKY-G, Mazda’s next-generation direct-injection gasoline engine, which looks to set the standard for Mazda’s core powertrain for the future. The SKY-G will begin with approximately a 15-percent improvement in fuel economy.

SKY-G

“By launching our SKY technologies into the global market place, beginning in 2011, we will take a huge step toward accomplishing our stated goal of achieving a 30-percent improvement in global fuel economy by 2015,” said Takashi Yamanouchi, representative director, president and CEO, Mazda Motor Corporation.

“By optimizing our existing technologies – engines, transmissions, weight reduction and aerodynamics – we aim to benefit all our customers and minimize the cost of ownership,” said Yamanouchi. “The phased introduction of these new technologies will form the building blocks of Mazda’s future.”

Following the SKY-G will be the SKY-D, the clean diesel engine, which will push the Mazda6 on towards 43 miles per gallon highway in 2012 – improving Mazda’s overall fuel economy by 20 percent.

SKY-D

Both the SKY-G and SKY-D will use low-friction engine blocks, direct injection and piezo-electric injectors. The SKY-G is fitted with a “highly functional variable valve timing mechanism,” and the SKY-D receives a 2-stage turbocharger.

By combining these new powertrain engines with the other advancements in Mazda’s future, look for Mazda to successfully achieve their goal of a 30 percent improvement on global fuel economy.

These engines will also come with the Mazda SKY-Drive high-efficiency automatic transmission, which offers first-rate fuel economy and a direct driving performance feel.

All automakers are devoting considerable resources to the development of alternative fuel powertrains. Diesel has become one popular route for many brands, but an Everett Nissan dealer also is eager to the arrival of EVs and other advanced powertrains. Even a Mitsubishi dealer Salisbury is eager for the arrival of Mitsubishi’s first electric vehicle. And while automakers continue to research technology such as advanced batteries and fuel cells, Alexandria Honda dealers foresee continued investment and improvement in existing technologies, including diesel engines.
